Etwa 90 Prozent aller Medienbeiträge zum Warum des Tucson-Massakers sind sich einig: Das "Klima des Hasses" hat die Hand gelenkt, welche die Glock-Automatik hielt, mit der Jared Loughner sechs Menschen erschossen hat. Allein auf Englisch finden sich bei Google 41.000 Einträge unter "Climate of Hate + 2011". Sozusagen Meteorologie statt Methodologie: Die Meinung kam sofort, die Recherche später.

Der junge Jared schien sich zunächst ganz normal zu entwickeln. Sein "psychischer Absturz", erinnert sich ein Schulkamerad, kam in der zehnten Klasse – lange vor Obama und Sarah Palin. Er wurde zum outcast – zum Ausgestoßenen. Ein Jahr später kommt es zur ersten Konfrontation mit der Polizei. Dann der Schulabbruch, der Umstieg von Alkohol zu Drogen. Zwei Festnahmen ohne Haft, aber was in der Polizeiakte stand, reichte aus, um den Weg in die Armee zu versperren. Arbeitgeber wollten deshalb auch nichts mehr von ihm wissen.
