Ermordung

Am Morgen des 31. Dezember 2010 wurde Wheeler beim Entladen eines Müllfahrzeugs auf der Cherry Island Mülldeponie in Wilmington ermordet aufgefunden.[1] Zuletzt war er am Nachmittag des 30. Dezember lebend in Wilmington gesehen worden, wo er für einen Obdachlosen gehalten wurde, da er nach Aussagen von Zeugen einen ungepflegten und verwirrten Eindruck machte und behauptete, beraubt worden zu sein. Aufgrund seiner politischen Vergangenheit erregte sein Tod öffentliches Aufsehen, das FBI schaltete sich in die Ermittlungen ein.

John Parsons Wheeler III. (* 1944; † 30. oder 31. Dezember 2010) war ein US-amerikanischer Soldat und als Militärexperte Berater im Stab mehrerer US-Präsidenten.

Leben

Wheeler graduierte 1966 an der United States Military Academy in West Point und diente während des Vietnamkriegs in verschiedenen Positionen, zunächst als Zugführer eines Platoons, später im Stab des Verteidigungsministeriums und im Hauptquartier des Generalstabs in Long Binh. In dieser Zeit verfasste er das erste Handbuch über die Effektivität von chemischen und biologischen Kampfstoffen für das US-Militär, das zum Verzicht der USA auf den Einsatz biologischer Waffen beitrug. 1971 schied er aus dem aktiven Dienst aus. Über die Nachkriegserlebnisse von Vietnamsoldaten und Kriegsgegnern schrieb er später das Buch Touched by fire.

Unter Präsident Reagan setzte er sich für die Anerkennung von Vietnamkriegs-Veteranen ein und schuf auf dessen Anweisung das Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program. Auf seine Initiative ging später die Einrichtung des Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund zurück, dessen Vorsitzender er von 1979 bis 1989 war, und der Bau der ersten Memorial Wall. Er gehörte dem Council on Foreign Relations und der United States Securities and Exchange Commission an, wo er an Ermittlungen zum Insiderhandel beteiligt war.

Von 2005 bis 2009 arbeitete er als Berater des Secretary of the Air Force, verantwortlich für die Bereiche Einrichtungen, Logistik und Umwelt. Zuletzt arbeitete Wheeler als Berater für die Mitre Corporation, eine regierungsnahe sicherheitspolitische Denkfabrik.

Less than 48 hours before the respected former Pentagon aide turned up dead last week in a Delaware landfill, Wheeler limped into a Wilmington parking garage. Coatless and confused, one of his shoes in hand, he bizarrely inquired about the location of his car, then declined offers of help, witnesses said.

A day later, police said Wednesday, surveillance video captured Wheeler in downtown Wilmington again – this time looking “confused” inside the Nemours Building at 10th and Orange Streets about 8:30 p.m. Dec. 30.

That was less than 14 hours before Wheeler’s body tumbled into a Wilmington landfill from a garbage truck. Police have called his death a homicide, but have refused to disclose how they believe Wheeler, 66, died.

It all runs counter to the burnished public image of Wheeler, who served in Vietnam, successfully pushed for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall, advised presidents and Pentagon brass, and served as the first chief executive of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and as secretary of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Update: Mitre Won’t Say What Wheeler Was Doing There
Wheeler had been working since March 2009 as a consultant at the nonprofit Mitre Corp. in McLean, company spokeswoman Jennifer J. Shearman said. She said the company does information technology work for several federal agencies, including the Defense and Homeland Security departments, but she did not know what type of work Wheeler did.

WILMINGTON -- At least two Wilmington City Council members said Friday that the investigation into the death of former Pentagon official John P. Wheeler III -- though important -- should not take priority over any other homicide investigation in the city.

The cause of Wheeler's death has not been released. Jay Lynch, a spokesman for the state Department of Health and Social Services, declined to say if the body had been released, but an employee of Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home in New Castle said it had the body. Newark police declined to comment on the results of the autopsy.
Wilmington City Councilman Kevin Kelley on Friday cautioned Wilmington police not to go overboard in investigating Wheeler's death.

"I don't want any more resources dedicated to this than we do any other homicide," Kelley said, adding that about half of the city's record 27 homicides from 2010 remain unsolved.
Kelley said he wants police to find the person responsible for Wheeler's death, but not at the expense of other investigation.

Councilwoman Loretta Walsh, who heads the city's Public Safety Committee, agreed, saying Kelley's comments were "absolutely appropriate."

Cause of death released in Wheeler case

WILMINGTON, Del. - January 28, 2011 (WPVI) -- A federal defense consultant whose body was found in a Delaware landfill was assaulted and died of blunt force trauma, the state medical examiner's office said Friday.

Brown said blunt force trauma involves "nonpenetrating" injuries such as concussions, contusions, lacerations, broken bones and abrasions, which are distinguished from penetrating wounds inflicted by stabbing or shooting.
"It's the result of an external object impacting your body," he said, adding that the object could be a hand, a foot or a weapon.
Wheeler, 66, was seen on video surveillance cameras wandering around downtown Wilmington in a disoriented manner in the two days before his body was found.

The garbage truck that dumped Wheeler's body collected all of its trash from commercial disposal bins in Newark, several miles from both his home in New Castle and from downtown Wilmington.
"We still don't know how he got to Newark," Farrall said Friday.

Minot police say four bodies were found in two homes in Minot today. They are investigating it as multiple murders.
Authorities say four bodies were found in two homes: two women and two males and that the deaths are related. Police say they have a person interest and say the public is not in danger. Two dogs were also found killed
