"Pet Goat“, genauer gesagt "The Pet Goat“, ist der Titel eines Kinderbuchs. Die Geschichte ist schnell erzählt. Ein kleines Mädchen hat eine Ziege als Haustier. Es ist ein unausstehliches Biest, das alles frisst und zerstört, was ihm in den Weg kommt. Die Eltern des Mädchens sind mit den Nerven fertig und möchten das Tier endlich loswerden. Und dann passiert es: Eines Tages gelingt es der Ziege das Fluchtauto einer Räuberbande anzurammen. Somit werden die Räuber festgenommen. Die pet goat wird zu Heldin. Happyend.
     US-Präsident George W. Bush hat diese Geschichte einer Grundschulklasse im US-Bundesstaat Florida vorgelesen, um Werbung für seine Bildungspolitik zu machen. Leider hätte das Timing nicht ungünstiger sein können. Wir schreiben nämlich den 11. September 2001 um 8h58. Das Ereignis wurde übrigens auf Video aufgenommen. (Zu finden ist es im Internet an mehreren Webseiten unter Stichwort "The Pet Goat“). Man sieht den Präsidenten, vor der Schulklasse auf einem niedrigen Stuhl sitzend. Im Hintergrund hängt ein Plakat mit der aufmunternden Losung: "Reading Makes a Country Great“. Plötzlich erscheint der Stabchef des Präsidenten, Andrew Card, im Bild und flüstert seinem Chef etwas Ernstes ins Ohr. Man ahnt den Inhalt. Etwa: "Mister President, ein Flugzeug ist gerade in einen Turm des New Yorker World Trade Center eingeschlagen.“ Bush hört zu, pausiert etwa 40 Sekunden und blickt ausdruckslos ins Leere. Dann setzt er nach dieser Auszeit mit der Lektüre fort. Nach fünf Minuten kehrt Andrew Card aber zurück und flüstert dem Präsidenten wieder etwas ins Ohr. Wohl eine Auskunft über den Anschlag auf den zweiten Turm des World Trade Center. Wieder Pause. Inzwischen hat der Präsident "The Pet Goat“ fertig vorgelesen und hält anschließend eine kurze Rede über die Wichtigkeit des Lesens...

- April 01 - Der ehemalige Sicherheitsexperte des Weissen Haus Richard Clark, zuständig für den Antiterror, gibt wiederholte Warnungen über einen bevorstehen Terrorangriff durch Bin Laden aus. Diese wurden aber seitens der Regierung ignoriert, sie waren ihnen bekannt, wurden als „nicht dringend“ eingestuft.
