August 21, 2008 GAITHERSBURG, Md.—The fall of the 47-story World Trade Center building 7 (WTC 7) in New York City late in the afternoon of Sept. 11, 2001, was primarily due to fires, the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced today following an extensive, three-year scientific and technical building and fire safety investigation. This was the first known instance of fire causing the total collapse of a tall building, the agency stated as it released for public comment its WTC investigation report and 13 recommendations for improving building and fire safety.

“Our study found that the fires in WTC 7, which were uncontrolled but otherwise similar to fires experienced in other tall buildings, caused an extraordinary event,” said NIST WTC Lead Investigator Shyam Sunder. “Heating of floor beams and girders caused a critical support column to fail, initiating a fire-induced progressive collapse that brought the building down.”

The primary objectives of the building and fire safety investigation of the World Trade Centre disaster were to determine (1) Why and how the WTC buildings collapsed after the initial impact of the aircraft. (2) Why the injuries and fatalities were so low or high depending on location (3) The procedures and practices that were used in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the WTC buildings, (4) Which building and fire codes, standards, and practices warrant revision. The seminar will describe the NIST investigation and how it seeks to make buildings, occupants, and first responders safer in future disasters. Theseminar will describe:
· The probable collapse sequence for each of the WTC towers due to the aircraft impact and subsequent fires to which the buildings were subjected during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
· The methodology used to analyze the aircraft impacts, fire dynamics, thermal response of the structure, and collapse of the structure due to aircraft impact and fire damage.
· The study of evacuation and emergency response that included nearly 1,200 first person interviews of building occupants, first responders, and families of victims.
- The investigations specific recommendations for improvements to building and fire codes, standards, and practices, including improvements to structural integrity, fire protection, building evacuation, and emergency response.

Prior to joining NIST, Dr. Sunder held a succession of positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) beginning in 1980: instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, principal research scientist, and senior research scientist.
Dr. Sunder’s awards include the Gilbert W. Winslow Career Development Chair (1985-87) and the Doherty Professorship in Ocean Utilization (1987-89) from MIT, the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize (1991) from the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Award (1997) from NIST.
Dr. Sunder holds a Bachelor of Technology (Honors) degree in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (1977), a Master of Science degree in civil engineering from MIT (1979), and a Doctor of Science degree in structural engineering from MIT (1981).

August 22, 2008 - GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Federal investigators said yesterday that they have solved a mystery of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks: the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7, a source of long-running conspiracy theories.

The 47-story trapezoid-shaped building sat north of the World Trade Center towers, across Vesey Street in lower Manhattan. On Sept. 11, as the North Tower collapsed, falling debris damaged Building 7 and ignited several fires inside. Skeptics have long argued that fire and debris alone could not have brought down such a large steel-and-concrete structure.
