In 1988 an audio version of The Guide was recorded. The audiobook was abridged and contained only two-thirds of the content of the printed edition.
In 2005 I obtained a copy of the audiobook on ebay. I did not realize until it was in my possession that the reader was Thaddeus Golas. Although the first five minutes of the tape had been overdubbed the rest of the recording was clean. Golas changed some of the content and it is interesting to listen to the tape and follow the words in the printed book. In the audiobook most mentions of LSD and sex were excluded from the recording.

The audiobook is out of print and the company that created it has closed. On this page are mp3 files made from the audiobook so that users of The Guide may share in the experience of hearing Golas's words in his own voice.

Eine, wenn nicht die Zeitgeistpersönlichkeit, die in desem Thread angeschnittene Thematik unbedingt zu nennen ist, ist  der US-amerikanische Psychologe und Autor Timothy Leary  († 31. Mai 1996 )

Timothy Leary wurde in den 1960er und 1970er dafür berühmt, dass er den freien und allgemeinen Zugang zu bewusstseinsverändernden Drogen (z.B. Meskalin, Psilocybin und LSD) propagierte.

Leary formulierte in diesem Zusammenhang die Zwei Gebote für das "Molekulare Zeitalter":
Thou shalt not alter the consciousness of thy fellow men.
(Du sollst das Bewusstsein deines Nächsten nicht verändern.)
Thou shalt not prevent thy fellow man from altering his or her own consciousness.
(Du sollst deinen Nächsten nicht daran hindern, sein oder ihr Bewusstsein zu verändern.)

Diese Sätze sind aber durchaus nicht nur in Bezug auf den Gebrauch von Drogen zu verstehen, sie beziehen sich auch auf die Manipulation durch Massenmedien, Politiker und Gruppenzwang.

Back in the 1960's a former Harvard professor stopped giving A's, B's and C's and started handing out LSD. his name was tomothy Leary and he was at the center of a controversy in North America over the growing use of psychedelic drugs. Leary ran a research center in New York state where young people took 'acid' while he took notes. The media took notice.

Father' of LSD dies at 102
NEW YORK (AP) -- Albert Hofmann, father of the mind-altering drug LSD whose medical discovery grew into a notorious "problem child," died Tuesday. He was 102.
Hofmann died of a heart attack at his home in Basel, Switzerland, according to Rick Doblin, president of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, in a statement posted on the association's Web site.

Hofmann's hallucinogen inspired -- and arguably corrupted -- millions in the 1960's hippie generation. For decades after LSD was banned in the late 1960s, Hofmann defended his invention.
"I produced the substance as a medicine. ... It's not my fault if people abused it," he said.
The Swiss chemist discovered lysergic acid diethylamide-25 in 1938 while studying the medicinal uses of a fungus found on wheat and other grains at the Sandoz pharmaceuticals firm in Basel.
He became the first human guinea pig of the drug when a tiny amount of the substance seeped onto his finger during a repeat of the laboratory experiment April 16, 1943.
"I had to leave work for home because I was suddenly hit by a sudden feeling of unease and mild dizziness," he wrote in a memo to company bosses.
"Everything I saw was distorted as in a warped mirror," he said, describing his bicycle ride home. "I had the impression I was rooted to the spot. But my assistant told me we were actually going very fast."

Spiritistischer Apport: Jenseitsbotschaft von Albert Hofmann  7. APRIL 2009
Basel/ Schweiz - Lucius Werthmüller gehört zu den meist erfahrenen Parapsychologen in der Schweiz und international. In den vergangenen Jahren wurde der Veranstalter der "Basler PSI-Tage" zu einem engen Freund des Erfinders des LSD Albert Hofmann, zu dessen 100. Geburtstag Werthmüller nicht zuletzt einen europaweit beachtete Kongress organisierte. Wie es scheint, reicht die Verbindung zwischen Hofmann und Werthmüller über den Tod des Chemikers, Autors und Vordenkers im Jahre 2008 hinaus - zumindest, wenn man einem so genannten Apport glauben schenkt, der sich während einer Séance im Januar 2009 in Form einer kleinen Schriftrolle manifestiert hatte und offenbar eine direkte Botschaft Hofmanns an den Parapsychologen darstellt.
