Total Denial is a gripping documentary of the victory of 15 indigenous people from the jungle of Burma over a leading corporation in a U.S. court.

The film begins with scene setting clips of Burma, the legendary Aung San Sui Kyi and legitimate leader of Burma, who figureheaded led the struggle against the vicious military dictatorship even from prison.

Amid the visually stunning temples, the colourful Burmese countryside and jungle, we focus in on an area near the Thai border, where hundreds of thousands of an ethnic minority, the Karen, hide.

In 1992 TOTAL and UNOCAL do a deal with the military dictatorship to run a gas pipeline from the Andaman Sea through Burma to Thailand. The dictatorship provide 'security' by massacres of the villagers, using rape and torture and forcing them to work on construction as slaves (at gunpoint).

Kaneva's award-winning film is remarkable in many ways, but chiefly as it tells the story of one man, Ka Hsaw Wa, an activist whose life was changed as young man when he came across the dead body of a young woman, her nipple cut off and a tree trunk rammed in her vagina.

Ka Hsaw Wa dedicated his life to human rights activism, speaking fluent English and Burmese, dodging back and forth as he plays cat-and-mouse with the border guards, marrying another right worker and even raising a family. All the while he is fighting to live and protect his homeland. At one point he describes how he was himself tortured. When he goes into difficult areas of the jungle, he takes a gun with a single bullet - to commit suicide if captured (to avoid torture).

Total Denial is no dry courtroom drama (although there is plenty of courtroom tension later on). We see the colour and bustling life of people on both sides of the Thai-Burmese border. Their optimism and love of life, the children singing, even after they have been burnt out of their homes and forced to flee five times.

The interviewers speak to eye-witnesses of brutal crimes and also see first hand the scars and wounds of people forced to work as slavery. (At one point the interviewer almost breaks down, speaking to a defector-soldier who corroborates the atrocities of colleagues but also confesses how he was forced to join the army.) Several NGO workers are interviewed, also giving eye-witness accounts of murder. One teacher describes the sight of a pregnant woman, shot and then burnt to death.

Avaaz Netzwerk Spendenaufruf für Burma

Der verhängnisvolle Zyklon, welcher über Burma hinwegfegte hinterließ über 100,000 Tote und Millionen obdachlos. Eine Naturkatastrophe, die durch das Versäumnis der Junta die eigene Bevölkerung zu warnen oder zu evakuieren, noch weiter verschlimmert wurde.

Gegenwärtig wird vom Regime noch immer ausländische Hilfe blockiert und deshalb sammelt das Avaaz Netzwerk Spenden für die Internationale Burmesische Mönchsorganisation, welche diese an Klöster in den betroffenen Gebieten weiterleitet.

Die direkte Unterstützung der Mönche bietet eine gute Möglichkeit um sicherzustellen, dass die Hilfe ohne Umwege zur Bevölkerung gelangt. Regierungen und internationale Hilfsorganisationen werden unter Umständen nicht ins Land gelassen und müssen sich den Vorschriften der Militärjunta beugen. Die Mönche hingegen stehen schon jetzt an vorderster Stelle und unterstützen die Opfer mit Unterkünften und Nahrung seit dem Wüten des Zyklons. Die Internationale Organisation Burmesischer Mönche wird das Geld dank ihres eigenen Netzwerkes direkt an die Klöster verteilen, damit Regierungskontrollen umgangen werden können.

Letztes Jahr standen über 800,000 Mitglieder des Avaaz Netzwerks Seite an Seite mit der burmesischen Bevölkerung, als diese sich gegen die Militärdiktatur erhoben hat. Das Regime hat damals keine Zeit verschwendet und der Armee befohlen, die friedliche Demokratiebewegung brutal niederzuschlagen. Doch wenn Zehntausende infolge einer Naturkatastrophe sterben, verzögert das Regime jegliche Reaktion, und wertvolle Hilfe droht in den Taschen der Generäle zu verschwinden.

Es scheint unwahrscheinlich, dass die Mönche Hilfe von ausländischen Regierungen oder den großen Hilfsorganisationen bekommen werden, auch wenn sie mehr Vertrauen als die eigene Junta bei der der Bevölkerung genießen und jetzt schon eine stärkere Präsenz vor Ort haben. Wenn wir jetzt alle nur einen kleinen Beitrag leisten, können wir hnen helfen, ihre so wichtige Mission der Hilfe in grösster Not zu erfüllen.

EU bereit zur Verschärfung der Sanktionen gegen Burma 18. Mai 2009
Nach der Inhaftierung der burmesischen Oppositionsführerin Aung San Suu Kyi droht die Europäische Union dem Militärregime in Rangun mit einer neuerlichen Verschärfung der seit 13 Jahren bestehenden Sanktionen. Die EU sei bereit, die bestehenden Maßnahmen zu verschärfen, sagte der tschechische Außenminister und EU-Ratsvorsitzende Jan Kohout am Montag nach Beratungen der Außenminister in Brüssel.

BURMA VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country , directed by Danish filmmaker Anders Østergaard uses camcorder and cellphone footage from undercover DVB reporters risking their lives. The story of the brutal quelling of the September 2007 monks' uprising is narrated by an unseen protagonist, Joshua, a 27-year-old reporter exiled in Thailand. A Sundance and Berlin festival award winner, the film opens May 20 at the Film Forum, New York in this its theatrical premiere.
Background--Burma, September 2007: An increase in fuel prices sparks extensive protests by students and activists against the military junta. For the first time, they are joined in the streets of Rangoon by thousands of Buddhist monks (the saffron revolution). While 100,000 people protest a repressive regime that has held the country hostage for over 40 years, foreign news crews are banned and the Internet is shut down. The Democratic Voice of Burma, a collective of 30 underground video journalists (VJs) record these dramatic events on handycams and cellphones and smuggle the footage out of the country, broadcasting it worldwide from Norway via satellite. Risking torture and life imprisonment, the VJs document the brutal clashes by the military and undercover police — themselves becoming the targets of the authorities.
