Obamas geheimer Brief an Teheran: Ist der Krieg gegen den Iran erst einmal gestoppt? "Die Straße nach Teheran führt über Damaskus"

Die New York Times hat darüber informiert, dass die Obama-Regierung am 12. Januar 2012 einen wichtigen Brief an die iranische Führung gerichtet hat.

Am 15. Januar 2012 betätigte der Sprecher des iranischen Außenministeriums, dass der Brief über drei diplomatische Kanäle nach Teheran gelangt ist:
(1) Eine Kopie des Briefes wurde Mohammed Khazaee, dem iranischen Botschafter bei den Vereinten Nationen, von Susan Rice, der US-Botschafterin bei den Vereinten Nationen, in New York City übergeben,

(2) eine zweite Kopie des Briefes wurde in Teheran von Livia Leu Agosti, der Botschafterin der Schweiz im Iran, übergeben und

(3) eine dritte Kopie ging dem Iran über (den irakischen Staatspräsidenten) Dschalal Talabani zu. (s. dazu auch hier)
In dem Brief stellte das Weiße Haus die Position der USA dar; nach Meinung iranischer Offizieller ist er aber ein Beleg für die realistische Erkenntnis: Die USA können es sich jetzt nicht leisten, einen Krieg gegen den Iran zu führen.

In dem Brief, den Präsident Barack Hussein Obama unterzeichnet hat, schlagen die USA die Aufnahme von Verhandlungen zwischen Washington und Teheran vor, mit dem Ziel, die Feindschaft zwischen dem Iran und den USA zu beenden....

The head of Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service, told an audience at a closed forum in Tel Aviv recently that Iran is trying to hit Israeli targets because of what it believes are Israeli attacks on it nuclear scientists. Yoram Cohen said that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, the same militant wing of the government linked to the recent alleged plot against the Saudi ambassador to the U.S., is working tirelessly to attack Israeli and Jewish targets abroad in order to deter Israel....

The USS Abraham Lincoln warship has remained stationed in the Strait of Hormuz despite an Iranian threat that no more aircraft carriers should transit the sensitive oil choke point as tensions in the Persian Gulf continue to simmer with Washington warning Tehran it will join an Israeli attack if Iran dares to fight back in any way.

... if Iran attempts to fight back in any way, which is all but inevitable, the US will join the attack. The Obama administration will then think itself justified in telling the American people that the US acted in self-defense, when in reality such a series of coordinated events is absurdly obvious.

OBAMA ADMINISTRATION: U.S. WOULD ‘COME TO ISRAEL’S DEFENSE’ IF IRAN ATTACKED IT  February 2nd, 2012
  
David Ignatius published an alarming story in today’s Washington Post, in which he quotes Leon Panetta predicting an Israeli attack on Iran in “April, May or June.”  Buried deeper within the article is an even more chilling passage:
Administration officials caution that Tehran shouldn’t misunderstand: The United States has a 60-year commitment to Israeli security, and if Israel’s population centers were hit, the United States could feel obligated to come to Israel’s defense.
In the context of the article, which portrays an Israeli first strike against Iran, we can only explain this statement as announcing to Iran that if it counter-strikes against Israel that the U.S. will join in the war against it.  That would help explain why the U.S. is amassing a massive amount of firepower in the Gulf including perhaps a record three carrier task forces preparing for God knows what mischief.
I can’t say clearly enough that what the U.S. has signaled in Ignatius’ report is that if Iran is attacked, it may not strike back against its attacker.  If it does, the U.S. will rain down hellfire and damnation on it.  This is frightening beyond measure.  I’ve never known the U.S. to lay down such a principle which virtually assures our joining in a war against Iran.  Israeli policymakers will be delighted to read these words.  Hawks like Bibi, Barak and Bogie Yaalon (from whom, more later) will be sharpening their spears and pruning hooks, not to mention their Jericho IIs and U.S.-supplied bunker busters....

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has a lot on his mind these days, from cutting the defense budget to managing the drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. But his biggest worry is the growing possibility that Israel will attack Iran over the next few months.
Panetta believes there is a strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June — before Iran enters what Israelis described as a “zone of immunity” to commence building a nuclear bomb. Very soon, the Israelis fear, the Iranians will have stored enough enriched uranium in deep underground facilities to make a weapon — and only the United States could then stop them militarily.

Santorum: Iran would nuke Missouri 02/03/12
The Hill | Rick Santorum warned that if Iran procures a nuclear weapon, it would pose a threat even to Missouri.

“Once they have a nuclear weapon, let me assure you, you will not be safe, even here in Missouris,” Santorum said Friday at a campaign stop in the Show Me State. “These are folks who have been and are at war with us since 1979. This is a country that has killed more troops in Afghanistan and Iraq than the Iraqis and Afghans.”
Santorum’s saber-rattling on Iran is nothing new. In the past he’s said that he would attack nuclear facilities in Iran if the country did not agree to international nuclear arms inspections.

Es gebe “eine ganze Reihe von Unterstützungsmaßnahmen”, die geleistet werden könnten, sagte der Senator. “Medizinische Unterstützung beispielsweise, Unterstützung in Bezug auf Informationen, Aufklärungsergebnisse, die wir sammeln, und schließlich können wir ihnen natürlich Waffen liefern und sie ausbilden.” Vorbild sei die Unterstützung der libyschen Rebellen im Kampf gegen den damaligen Machthaber Muammar al-Gaddafi – auch die waren vom Westen mit Waffen beliefert worden.

Allein am Wochenende seien “hunderte in Syrien von der syrischen Regierung” getötet worden, sagte Lieberman. “Ich glaube nicht, dass im Jahr 2012 die Welt Tag für Tag weiterhin zuschauen kann. Es ist an der Zeit, Planungen durchzuführen und aktiv zu werden.” Je früher Assad gehe, desto weniger Unschuldige würden getötet – “und wir sollten alle versuchen, dazu beizutragen”. Das syrische Volk habe einen “unglaublichen Mut gezeigt im Angesicht einer Regierung, die sehr viel stärker ist als sie”.

But during a live interview with TODAY’s Matt Lauer, the president left the military option open if there’s evidence that economic sanctions and diplomatic efforts fail to convince the Iranian regime to give up its nuclear ambitions and threats to close the Strait of Hormuz.
“I don’t think Israel has made a decision. I think they, like us, think Iran has to stand down their nuclear weapons program,” said Obama, speaking from the Blue Room of the White House. “Until they do, I think Israel is going to be very concerned, and we are as well.”
“We are going to make sure we work in lock step and work to resolve this, hopefully diplomatically,” said Obama, who spoke about Iran, the economy and the Super Bowl during the five-minute interview. “No option is off the table,” Obama said.

Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn als Drehkreuz für Aufmarsch gegen Iran?  06.02.2012
Auf dem rheinland-pfälzischen Flugplatzes Frankfurt-Hahn gab es allein im Januar offenbar 328 Flugbewegungen durch das US-Militär. Diese Zahlen veröffentlichte die Bürgerinitiative gegen den Nachtflughafen Hahn (BI). Nach Angaben der Beobachter handelte es sich dabei im wesentlichen um um Flüge der amerikanischen Militärlogistiker Evergreen Airlines (EIA) und Altlas Air (GTI) mit insgesamt 194 Flugbewegungen. Besonders auffallend seien die demnach 120 Flugbewegungen von Delta Airlines (DAL), die ausschließlich Truppentransporte durchführt. Mit den Flügen würden Truppen oder Militärgüter in den Irak, nach Afghanistan und in die Golfregion transportiert.
