Foto-Kontroverse: Versteinerte Holzplanke auf dem Mars?

Pasadena/ USA - Erneut sorgen Aufnahmen des NASA-Marsrovers Opportunity besonders in Internetforen und auf einschlägigen Seiten für heiße Diskussionen - sieht es doch fast so aus, als liege vor dem Marsroboter eine versteinerte Holzplanke im Marssand.

Die Fotoserie aus insgesamt 27 Aufnahmen wurde am 115. Tag (Sol 115) der Mission auf dem Mars in der Region Meridiani Planum gemacht. Tatsächlich sticht auf den ersten Blick ein Objekt aus der Umgebung deutlich in Form und Farbe hervor. Mehr noch: In der Vergrößerung fühlen sich viele Betrachter an eine Holzplanke, wie sie etwa für Eisenbahnschienen verwendet werden, erinnert.

Methan-Ausbruch auf dem Mars: Zeichen von Leben?

Washington (dpa) - Forscher der US-Weltraumbehörde NASA haben auf dem Mars große Ausbrüche von Methangas beobachtet und geben damit der Frage nach Leben auf dem Roten Planeten neuen Auftrieb.

Allerdings sei der Ursprung des Gases völlig ungeklärt und könne ebenso gut geochemischer Natur sein, schreiben die Wissenschaftler um Michael Mumma vom NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt (US-Staat Maryland) im US-Fachjournal «Science» (online vorab). In einer am Donnerstag veröffentlichten Erklärung sprach die NASA von «mysteriösem Methan» auf dem Roten Planeten.[...]

Map colorization programs follow given 2D/3D landscape attributes and are not known to create highly organized, distinctive, geometric patterns on their own. Jenseits der Pixel

Seit 1960 starteten 27 Raumsonden zum Mars. 12 erreichten ihr Ziel und sanden über 40000 Fotos zur Erde. Über 5 Jahre hinweg wurde der gesamte Planet lückenlos kartographiert. Ein genaues Studium der Marsoberfläche enthüllt ein Geheimnis, welches bisher nur in fantasievollen Science-Fiction Filmen verarbeitet wurde.

Zwar erbringen europäische Marssonden offiziell den Beweis, dass es auf dem Mars keine künstlichen Strukturen oder Zeichen von Leben gibt, hinter den Pixeln der ersten Fotos aus den 70er Jahren, verbergen sich allerdings viele interessante Objekte.

Thomas Moser hat in seiner Dokumentation "Jenseits der Pixel" auf offiziellen NASA-Fotografien nach Spuren einer Zivilisation gesucht. Die Ergebnisse sind überraschend. Lassen sich doch auf der Marsoberfläche viele Strukturen finden, welche irdischen Steinbrüchen und Tagebau-Anlagen sehr ähnlich sind.
