Im finnischen Oripää ist am Osterwochenende ein mysteriöses Fischsterben entdeckt worden. In dem besonders klaren, an einer der größten Quellen Nordeuropas gelegenen Gewässer Myllylähde fanden Einheimische nach dem Aufbrechen der winterlichen Eisdecke eine große Anzahl verendeter Fische. Experten sind vorerst ratlos.

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) – A record number of big-game animals perished this winter in parts of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming from a harsh season of unusually heavy snows and sustained cold in the Northern Rockies, state wildlife managers say.

"Elk, deer and moose -- those animals are having a pretty tough time," said Wyoming Game and Fish biologist Doug Brimeyer.

Snow and frigid temperatures in pockets of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming arrived earlier and lingered longer than usual, extending the time that wildlife were forced to forage on low reserves for scarce food, leading more of them to starve.

Based on aerial surveys of big-game herds and signals from radio-collared animals, experts are documenting high mortality among offspring of mule deer, white-tailed deer and pronghorn antelope.

Bis zu 70 Walen droht vor der Küste Schottlands ein qualvoller Tod. Tierschützer machten sich auf den Weg, um die Grindwale vor dem Stranden und damit dem Sterben zu retten. Die Tiere waren vor der Insel South Uist im äußersten Norden Schottlands gesichtet worden. Viele von ihnen hätten Verletzungen am Kopf, sagte ein Sprecher der Tierschutzorganisation SPCA. Sobald eines der Tiere an den Strand schwimme, würden alle anderen vermutlich folgen. Dort würden die Säugetiere dann sterben.

Essen.   Ein Massensterben von Fischen in der Ruhr hat am Nachmittag für einen Großeinsatz gesorgt. Erste Proben geben Hinweise auf eine Wasserbelastung. Die Polizei ermittelt wegen des Verdachts der illegalen Einleitung von Schadstoffen. Inwieweit das Trinkwasser betroffen ist, kann noch nicht beurteilt werden.

Mysterious Disease Killing Alaskan Seals
Marine wildlife experts say they have been unable to determine what has killed nearly 200 Arctic ringed seals in Alaska since July.
The outbreak was first discovered along Alaska’s North Slope, where severely ill and dead ringed seals were found with excessive hair loss and lesions on their faces and flippers.
Similar mysterious deaths have been reported in Canada and Russia, and the illness may have spread to other species including, spotted seals, bearded seals and walruses.

The environmental agency NOAA says tests have ruled out viruses, including some that killed hundreds of seals in Europe during 1988.

Mystery virus kills thousands of lambs
Thousands of lambs have been killed by a new virus that is threatening the survival of many British farms.
The Schmallenberg virus causes lambs to be born dead or with serious deformities such as fused limbs and twisted necks, which mean they cannot survive.

This week has seen one of the more shocking reports to emerge so far this year, the discovery of an unexplained bio-plague which is causing birth defects in record numbers in sheep and cattle stocks throughout English farms and in parts of the continent, believed to be linked to the Schmallenberg virus.
The Independent newspaper’s Michael McCarthy wrote a piece on this topic today, attempting to combine recent animal diseases in Europe to climate change. He grabbed the opportunity to patch together what are clearly two very separate real issues, and bind them with one theoretical one: the Schmallenberg virus in sheep, African horse sickness - and ‘European warming caused by climate change’.
